Works by John Midgley
There is a wealth of visual art activitiy in North Norfolk. As well as the numerous excellent commercial galleries, there are a number of temporary exhibitions held in alternative venues across the district, the best known of these being Salthouse, which is held annually in the summer in Salthouse Church. For full listings of events see Art & Craft Exhibitions below. There are also permanent exhibitions of local artists' work in a number of galleries and several artists who invite you to visit their working studios, see Open Studios and Permanent Exhibitions below.
At North Norfolk District Council, we have our own exhibition space on the first floor, which is open to the public. If you would like to exhibit your work here for free contact Rosie Glasgow rosie.glasgow@north-norfolk.gov.uk 01263 516324
The Royal Watercolour Society Friends in East Anglia (RWSFEA)
RWSFEA has been formed to further the understanding of watercolour and enjoyment of those who paint, collect or simply just love looking at watercolour paintings. As a Friend of the RWSFEA you will have the opportunity to
1) Attend workshops led by RWS Members
2) Submit work to exhibitions juried by the RWS
3) Take part in a varied programme of events and an Annual dinner
4) Enjoy various discounts from the Bankside Gallery in London on RWS pictures and books.
The Royal Watercolour Society represents the finest watercolour painting in Britain. It is the oldest watercolour society in the world and is second only in importance to The Royal Academy as an art society. The RWS has defined 'a watercolour' to mean 'a painting in a water- based medium on a paper-based support'. This definition allows a range of work of infinite variety. The RWS originated in1804 as a protest Group of artists who felt badly used by The Royal Academy, which would not elect painters in watercolour. There was no coherent RWS style, it was simply a society that many of the finest painters in watercolour of the time wanted to join. Though they themselves were painters in a conservative tradition, the founders would have realised the great subtlety and delicacy of watercolour, and also its infinite capacity for development. Salthouse Sculpture Trail
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Salthouse Sculpture Trail is launched this year - a new development for the North Norfolk Exhibition Project. Sculptures by local artists will be placed at key points, linked by the ten-mile Trail, spanning Salthouse, Holt and Kelling Heath.
The route can be explored by walking or cycling and by using the Holt to Kelling Heath railway, and, being zoned, will allow visitors to view works without covering the entire Trail.
For information see the separate trail guide/map or visit www.salthousetrail.co.uk.
Some of the sculptures will be permanent, some semi-permanent and some in place during the summer only. This is an ongoing venture with new works added every year, each created by Norfolk sculptors or as a result of workshops led by local artists.
The Trail is sponsored by Norfolk Country Cottages, with additional funding from Arts and Business, Kelling Heath Holiday Park and Holt Area Partnership
