Who can qualify for benefit?

You are entitled to claim benefits if you are on a low income, a UK resident and liable to pay Council Tax and/or rent and that you are living at the address you are claiming for.  However you cannot get help towards mortgage payments – advice regarding this can instead be obtained from the Department for Work and Pensions.

You will not qualify for Housing and Council Tax Benefit if your savings are greater than £16,000, the only exceptions to this is if you are in receipt of:

  • Income Support
  • Jobseekers Allowance (income-based)
  • Employment Support Allowance (income-related)
  • Pension Credit (guarantee-element). 

If you do not qualify for Council Tax Benefit you may be entitled to Second Adult Rebate.
