Shoreline Management Plans
A Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) provides a large-scale assessment of coastal evolution and presents a policy framework which determines how the shoreline will be managed, i.e. which sections of the coast are to be protected. It projects the short, medium and long-term effects of the policy, indicating which areas are likely to be at risk of coastal erosion and coastal flooding. Two SMPs affect North Norfolk's coastline, Sub cell 3a (Hunstanton to Kelling Hard) and Sub cell 3b (Kelling Hard to Lowestoft Ness).
Sub cell 3a - Hunstanton to Kelling Hard
This is currently being reviewed, led by the Environment Agency. Further information about this review can be obtained by viewing the Environment Agency's 2nd Generation SMP webpage and contacting them directly via the advertised email address. Their webpage also gives access to the Draft SMP-July 2009 'Managing the Coast' and the Non-Technical Summary.
Sub cell 3b - Kelling Hard to Lowestoft Ness
A revised Plan has been prepared by North Norfolk District Council in partnership with Great Yarmouth Borough Council, Waveney District Council and the Environment Agency, who are all members of the East Anglian Coastal Group (EACG). The Plan sets out conditions for the acceptance of the SMP and is supported by a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and other environmental studies.
A Public Consultation took place from 24 May until 2 July 2010 with drop-in sessions at Sea Palling and Mundesley. Comments submitted are being collated and considered. The Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and other documents relating to the revised Plan can be downloaded below or seen at the Council offices in Cromer.
