Coastal Management Plan

NNDC is formulating a Coastal Management Plan (CMP) which aims to coordinate all the necessary actions to manage the impacts of coastal change in an effective and integrated fashion. The CMP is a non-statutory plan, which will follow the process outlined below. The involvement of local communities in the development of the plan is essential.

Stage

Progress

Raise awareness of the CMP amongst local communities

Annual meetings with parishes have taken place and a leaflet has been distributed amongst relevant organisations and communities

Understand the implications of coastal change on the settlements selected in the Local Development Framework Core Strategy

Workshops were held in the five Coastal Service Villages along the eroding coastline. These are available to view or download below:

Determine the 'scope' of the CMP and its relationship with other plans and strategies

A 'scoping meeting' was held in May 2008

Undertake research into the impacts of coastal erosion and the possible options to enable communities to adapt in response to it.

Consultants were appointed to undertake an evidence gathering study. The final report and annexes are available to view or download below:

Develop a shared set of ideas about how we should go about managing coastal change

A workshop for representatives of coastal communities was held in November 2008. A report of the day will be available here, once received from our consultants.

Public participation on the draft CMP document

Once the document has been drafted comments will be invited from the general public and other interested parties - expected to be summer 2009
