Local Government Review

Government decides to keep Norfolk local

North Norfolk, along with the other District and Borough Councils and Norfolk County Council, will continue to be the focal point of local government in Norfolk following the government’s announcement that Norwich is to become a single unitary council within its existing boundaries, but that all the other existing authorities will remain as they are.

When the process of Local Government Review in Norfolk began over two years ago NNDC said that the most sensible decision would be to keep the existing structure. Had the government, and its agent, the Boundary Committee, heeded that advice then rather than leave its decision until now it would have prevented the waste millions of pounds and a great deal of uncertainty right across the county.

It’s good that the government has recognised that in the main the existing local government structure not only provides the best value for money but is also the one that local people prefer. NNDC can now get back to concentrating on providing excellent services for everyone who lives in North Norfolk while charging one of the lowest council taxes in the country.
