Student qualification

If you are a student you may get a Council Tax discount if your are:

  • 18 but still entitled to child benefit
  • between 18 and 20, in further education (for example doing A levels, BTEC, a Foundation or Access courses)
  • in higher education (for example doing a degree, HND, Diploma of higher education or project 2000).
  • employed as an apprentice (for example doing an NCBQ and earning less that £160 a week)
  • a foreign language assistant registered with the Central Bureau for Education Visits and Exchanges, and appointed by a British school or college.

Proof you are a student

We need to see a certificate if you need a discount or exemption. You can get a certificate from college registration departments. This certificate should have all the information on it we need. For example date of birth, start and end date of the course, name of the college, name of the course and your name.

Discounts

The full Council Tax bill is based on two adults living in a house. If you are a student and the other adult is not, you can get a discount of 25% (quarter) of the bill. If there are more than two adults in your house, the students will not be counted towards the Council Tax bill but the other adults will.

Exemptions

If you live in a house with only students none of you have to pay Council Tax. A property left empty by a student may be exempt.
