Accidents and incidents that occur at work, or in connection with work activities, are investigated by either the Commercial Team or the Health and Safety Executive to prevent their recurrence. The level of investigation will be dependent on the severity of the accident.
For guidance on whether an accident should be reported to us, contact the Commercial Team. Generally, the following events should be reported, which is done via the Incident Contact Centre on (0845) 300 9923 or via the Incident Contact website:
- fatalities;
- specified major injuries;
- injuries that result in absence from work for over three days;
- injuries to a member of the public who is taken to hospital for treatment directly from the premises;

Requirement to register wet cooling systems
The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992 require those in control of premises with wet cooling systems to register them with their local authority and to notify any subsequent changes, including when the plant ceases to be in operation. Whilst the task of maintaining records of wet cooling systems rests with local authorities, responsibility for enforcement of standards of assessment and control is split between the HSE and the local authorities.
The main purpose for this notification process is to identify where potential sources of risk are located and allow for easier identification, monitoring and inspection by the enforcing authorities.
If you wish to notify us of a new plant or any changes to an existing plant please complete the Notification Form. Registration is free. There are two ways of registering your cooling tower and/or evaporative condenser. To register online you must first register with Business Link, you can then apply online:
- Notification of cooling towers and/or evaporative condensers
- Change a cooling tower and/or evaporative condenser notification
Alternatively, the form can be completed electronically or downloaded below. It can then be sent to use by post or email.
The application will be determined within 7 days from the receipt by this authority of an acceptable and complete application. The Cooling Tower and Evaporative Condenser Register is also available to download.
