Manual Handling and Emergency First Aid Training Courses

Courses are held on an ad hoc basis subject to demand. There is currently insufficient demand to make a course viable.

MANUAL HANDLING

This course is designed for all employees who are required to move, lift or carry objects. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations places a duty on every employer to reduce the potential injury from manual handling operations.

The Council is working with St John Ambulance, nationally recognised trainers in manual handling, to facilitate this course.

The principles of the manual handling course can be completed in one 4-hour session and covers:

  • Regulations
  • Spinal anatomy and relating injuries
  • Basic rules and practice
  • Risk assessment and risk reduction planning

The 4-hour session of the Manual Handling course is mandatory prior to taking the Patient Handling element of the course which is an additional 2-hour session covering:

  • Safe manual handling techniques
  • Safe practice in moving and handling patients as appropriate to the establishment

It is designed for carers who need to move patients.

An attendance certificate is awarded to candidates on successful completion of the course. This is valid for a period of three years after which time further training should be undertaken.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID

The Emergency First Aid training course qualifies the participant as an "appointed person" in the workplace.

Having an "appointed person" is a minimum requirement of Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.

The Council is working with St John Ambulance, nationally recognised trainers in first aid, to facilitate the "appointed person" course.

The course, which can be completed in one 4-hour session, covers common workplace injuries, resuscitation, managing incidents and first aid equipment.

An "appointed person" attendance certificate is awarded to candidates on successful completion of the course. This is valid for a period of three years after which time further training should be undertaken.
