It has been the norm for the carriage of school children, on behalf of the County Passenger Transport Unit (PTU), to be undertaken by licensed hackeny carriage and private hire drivers using licensed vehicles as well as County Council approved drivers using their own cars. This practice will cease shortly and any person undertaking this task will have to be licensed by the District Council in which they reside, and so will their vehicle.

Taxi Drivers
Annual licence required to drive a licensed hackney or private hire vehicle. Medicals are required on application, age 50, 55, 60, and annually thereafter.
All drivers are required every 3 years to obtain an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check. On 1 March 2002 the Exceptions Order 1975 was amended to include taxi drivers. The Exceptions Order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 sets out those occupations and positions exempt from the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. These are generally positions of trust, where there is valid need to see a person's full criminal history in order to assess their suitability for a position. It is a requirement of the CRB's Code of Practice that all Registered Bodies must have a written policy on the correct handling and safekeeping of Disclosure information.
