Find Out About a Career Serving the North Norfolk Community

25 January, 2006

North Norfolk District Council will have a stand at Cromer Jobcentre this Friday (27 January, 2006) as part of Public Sector Jobs Week - a national campaign to raise awareness of the range and value of jobs in local administration.

The stand will be open from 10am to 4pm, with NNDC Personnel team staff on hand to explain what kind of jobs are available in local authorities across Norfolk, and how to apply for them.

Local authorities employ about 3 per cent of the country's population. Councils offer career opportunities over a huge range of trades, disciplines and professions. North Norfolk District Council staff include planners, accountants, auditors, environmental health experts, economic development specialists, conservation officers and park wardens, administrators, lawyers, building control officers, computer programmers, and administrators. These people work on the front line providing essential services to the community, or support those who do.

Other authorities also do similarly demanding but rewarding work to improve the quality of life for local people, to look after our precious environment while seeking to safeguard and improve our health and prosperity, and to help the most vulnerable sections of our communities.

Working in local government is not limited to purely local work. But it can suit people who are looking to build a career in the community where they live, and it can appeal to those who are looking to switch careers later in life, as well as those who are just starting out in work.

During Public Sector Jobs Week (23 to 27January), other district and borough councils, Norfolk County Council and Norwich City Council will likewise be promoting local government careers, with stands in Jobcentres across Norfolk.

Public Sector Jobs Week is an initiative of the Employers' Organisation, working with the Society of Chief Personnel Officers, the National Health Service and other public sector partners. For more information, see:

At Cromer on Friday, NNDC will be encouraging anyone who is interested to join its register of temporary staff, and will also explain its procedure for offering work experience placements to Year 10 (14-year-old) schoolchildren who have a specific interest in a particular area of council work. (Parents or teachers who would like to know more about the work experience opportunities can call the Personnel and Payroll team on 01263 516035.)
