New Community Gym to help Stalham keep fit

07 April 2010

A new Community Gym is opening in Stalham on 12 April, based in the Baptist Church Rooms on the High Street. The new gym will offer two morning (Monday and Thursday, 9.30 – 12am) and two evening (Tuesday and Friday, 6 – 9pm) sessions each week.

North Norfolk District Council’s ‘Mobile Gym’ has been operating in the Baptist Church Rooms for the past year, but now needs to move on to other parts of the District. However, the enthusiasm of the 25 to 30 regular attendees at the Monday Mobile Gym sessions has been so great that applications were made for funding for a permanent facility. A grant for over £8,800 has been received from the Big Lottery ‘Awards for All’, which will cover the purchase of equipment and initial hall hire, insurance and instructor costs. People attending the sessions will be asked to pay a small annual membership fee and a further sum for each session they attend, which will ensure that the gym can become self-sustaining in the long term.

Equipment will include cycling and rowing machines, benches, steps, weights, resistance bands and core stability balls, and everyone attending will be offered a personal fitness programme. “There’ll be everything anyone needs to have an enjoyable and effective keep-fit session, with the assistance of fully qualified instructors,” said Wyn Nurse, Active England Coordinator for NNDC. “Everyone in Stalham has been really enthusiastic and I’m delighted with the facilities available in the new Community Gym.”

The Community Gym will be opened by the Chairman of North Norfolk District Council at 11am on Monday 12 April, when he will be joined by Laurie Hull, Director of Active Norfolk, and Becky Pheasey, Fit as a Fiddle Coordinator for Age Concern, both supporters of the award-winning NNDC Mobile Gym.
