Artist’s portraits of unlikely models on show at Council HQ

16 January 2012

For the past year renowned North Norfolk artist Margie Britz has been working on a collection of unlikely portraits, and the results will go on display at the North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) offices in Cromer from Thursday 19 January.

Having recently developed an interest in portraiture, when asked whether she would consider having an exhibition of her work at NNDC, Margie suggested to council Arts Officer Brenda Seymour that she draw portraits of members of NNDC staff. Enough willing volunteers were found and so, working with one unlikely model a month throughout 2011, Margie has created a unique series of charcoal portraits.

The 12 staff involved in the project have been modelling for Margie in their own time, and they, as much as anyone else, are looking forward to seeing the full series of portraits for the first time when the exhibition opens on 19 January.

NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, John Lee, said, “North Norfolk hosts a wealth of excellent artists and craftworkers, and the Council is pleased to support them whenever it can. This will be a particularly interesting exhibition and I can’t wait to see how Margie Britz has portrayed our staff.”

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday – Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.
