What’s special about Cromer’s historic environment?

Cromer is undergoing a Conservation Area Appraisal — a review of the conservation area designation that protects the town’s character through the planning process.
North Norfolk District Council’s Conservation, Design and Landscape team has drawn up a draft Character Appraisal and Management Proposals for Cromer. This seeks to define the special qualities in Cromer’s conservation area and the things that threaten it. It also aims to give planners guidelines for preventing the erosion of Cromer’s character – and enhancing it where possible.
A consultation about the proposals will held in the town during June and July, with an exhibition displayed in the Library, on Prince of Wales Road. Questionnaires will be available for people to complete after they’ve had a look at what’s proposed.
For those who wish to speak to a conservation officer about any issues affecting the conservation area, there will be a drop-in session at the Community Hall, Garden Street on Wednesday, 18 July, from 7pm to 8.30pm, with NNDC officers available to explain the process and answer questions.
The consultation runs until 23 July.
Councillor Keith Johnson said: “This is an important exercise, because it aims to preserve the things people think are special about the town’s built environment and street scene. Please take this opportunity to tell us what you think is special about Cromer’s built heritage.”
He added: “Without doubt, Cromer’s historic environment matters enormously to people living and working in the town, as well as those visiting it.”
The exhibition can be seen at Cromer Library from 11 June during normal opening hours:
- Monday: 9.30am – 7pm
- Tuesday: 9.30am – 5pm
- Wednesday: 9.30am – 1pm
- Thursday: 9.30am – 5pm
- Friday: 9.30am – 7pm
- Saturday: 10am – 1pm
