Norfolk Waste Awards

Nominations invited for Norfolk's Waste Awards 2008

Are you a recycling hero or do you know someone who is? Nominations are open for the 2008 Norfolk Waste Partnership awards. The annual awards, now in their sixth year, invite nominations from community groups, social enterprises, business and people in Norfolk who have made a difference by successfully tackling Norfolk's waste this year.

You may know someone that has reduced their own waste and encourages others to be less wasteful, or a community project that transforms waste materials into something useful or maybe a business that has implemented a programme to recycle and minimise what they send to landfill.

Barry Coleman, Leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council and chairman of the Norfolk Waste Partnership, said: "There are so many excellent waste related activities in Norfolk but local councils don't automatically hear about them all. The awards are an excellent way to acknowledge these efforts and we'd like to give as many individuals and groups as possible the chance to be recognised. Each year we see an increase in the number of entries, so selecting winners is increasingly challenging."

Mark Henderson, Waste Partnership and Strategy Officer, Norfolk County Council, added: "The panel of judges will represent the various sectors and will be looking for something different. It isn't just about how much waste people are recycling, even small activities can really make a difference and inspire others to do more. "

Previous winners include the inspiring efforts of Trevor Lynn, Fresh Produce manager at Queen's Road Sainsburys who was instrumental in redistributing fresh produce that is past it's sell by date but not past its use by date to a number of local charities and GY Woodstock enable people with mental health problems to learn new skills whilst turning waste wood into high quality products.

Nominations require a short entry form, available on line at www.norfolk.gov.uk/nwpawards. To find out more about the awards or to request a paper copy, call 0844 800 8004. Completed entries must be received by 8 December 2008.

Shortlisted nominees will be invited to a special awards ceremony at County Hall (Norwich), hosted by the chairman of Norfolk County Council, at the end of January 2009.
