Since its very first exhibition, the (voluntary) North Norfolk Exhibition Project (NNEP) has annually staged a curated month-long contemporary art exhibition in the beautiful setting of Salthouse Church.
Each year, those selected artists with a Norfolk connection have produced thought-provoking, exciting work; often inspired by and reflecting the local built and natural environment. In the absence of a dedicated non-commercial gallery in North Norfolk, the Project plays an invaluable role in promoting contemporary visual art. The NNEP exhibitions are recognised as one of the County's premier arts events.

Salthouse 09

Salthouse 09 will be the ninth annual exhibition mounted by the North Norfolk Exhibition Project. The NNEP was set up as a partnership between contemporary Norfolk artists and the North Norfolk District Council. The Project subsequently made a partnership agreement with Salthouse Church, its chosen exhibition venue. The principal object of the Project is to promote contemporary Norfolk art. We give artists the opportunity to respond to an exciting and challenging space. We encourage artists to extend themselves and to make innovative work that cannot be shown easily in local commercial galleries.

The Committee has found that the basis for successful exhibitions has been to choose a different curator each year to bring a fresh approach and a fresh eye to the selection of artists. Once the Committee has discussed and agreed to the curator's proposal, it gives the curator complete freedom to select artists from those responding to the Call to Artists, to invite a number of artists, and to plan the placing of the work.

We are pleased to announce that the Curator for Salthouse 09 is Simon Martin

Simon Martin is an art historian, curator and writer. Originally from Norfolk, he works at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, winner of the Gulbenkian Prize for Britain's Best Museum in 2007. He is the author of 'Poets in the Landscape: The Romantic Spirit in British Art' and 'Colin Self: Art in the Nuclear Age'.

The theme for Salthouse 09 is Salt of the Earth
