Shoreline Management Plans
Shoreline Management Plans (SMPs) are non-statutory plans for coastal defence management planning. The aim of an SMP is to provide a strategic assessment of the risks associated with coastal erosion.
The SMPs provide estimates of how the coast is likely to change over the next 100 years, taking into account the future implementation of coastal policies, geology, likely impacts of climate change and the existing condition of the coast including coastal defences.
Two Shoreline Management Plans are active along the north Norfolk coastal frontage, SMP5 which incorporates the coast to the west of Kelling Hard and SMP6 which incorporates the coast to the east of Kelling Hard.
- SMP5 Hunstanton to Kelling Hard, previously SMP3a, this SMP is led by the Environment Agency and the area within north Norfolk is managed by the Environment Agency.
-
SMP6 Kelling Hard to Lowestoft Ness, previously SMP3b, this SMP was lead by North Norfolk District Council and covers coastal frontages which are managed by NNDC, Environment Agency, Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Waveney District Council.
