At North Norfolk District Council, we are currently recruiting for two Benefits Officer Apprentices. We spoke to Trudi, our Benefits Manager, about why employing apprentices are crucial to the service.

“We have always considered employing apprentices to support the service for a number of reasons. Apprentices bring a new dimension to the team, bringing fresh perspective and new ideas. The range of skills apprentices have to offer can make us reflect on how we do things and can lead to making improvements and being more efficient. We have been really successful with apprentices and have seen them become part of the team, acquiring long-term development and opportunity within the Council”

Trudi Grant, Benefits Manager

We recently spoke to Nicola, who started at the Council as a Benefits Officer Apprentice and is now employed as a Benefits Officer.

Why did you choose to undertake an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to retrain in a new area.

What are the benefits of being an apprentice?

The benefits are that you gain experience and a qualification at the same time, and you get a lot of colleague support. It can also, like with me, go on to a permanent career. I did my apprenticeship 5 to 6 years ago and I’ve also now completed further training.

What advice would you give to someone who was thinking about starting an apprenticeship?

It gives you the best of both worlds, so you can approach employers with experience and qualifications. I think employers are more interested in relevant experience now than ever before so it’s a great opportunity that you couldn’t necessarily get within a solely educational route.

What are your future aspirations after completing your apprenticeship?

I’ve completed further training, I would like to take this further and continue to progress. Currently, it is nice being part of a team where your input is valued because they’ve seen you grow, but in time, I would like to expand on my current position.

Considering an apprenticeship in Benefits?

Hear from Harvey, one of our previous Benefits Officer Apprentices, who has gained a permanent position at NNDC.
