Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, is one of the co-signatories on a letter to Rishi Sunak, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, that highlights the ever-increasing burden on coastal authorities of tackling and mitigating the growing impact of coastal erosion on communities and infrastructure.
The letter, written by Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, has been co-signed by leaders, mayors and chief executives of several local authorities that have responsibilities for coastal areas.
It highlights the current lack of legislation requiring utility companies to contribute to coastal defence projects, even though their infrastructure often benefits from the protection given by such works.
Local authorities, along with agencies such as the Environment Agency and EU partners, invest hundreds of millions of pounds annually in maintenance and construction schemes to safeguard communities against the impact of coastal erosion.
