Following discussions with concerned business owners, the Chamber of Trade and local Councilors, a temporary solution has been found whilst Triio and Cadent are undertaking gas works in North Walsham Town Centre. NNDC has taken positive action to support retail and other businesses in the Town Centre by agreeing to suspend short stay parking charges in the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street Car Parks.
This decision recognises and seeks to address the disruption anticipated in the Town Centre through these necessary infrastructure works, particularly the difficulty accessing the marketplace and the potential loss of on-street parking spaces.
NNDC wishes to support North Walsham businesses and get their message out to all that the town is very much open for business; NNDC is already committed to supporting the vitality and vibrancy of the town centre through the Heritage Action Zone funding, which will see the Council and a range of partners make significant investment in the town centre environment following the completion of the gas main works.
In addition to offering two-hours free parking in the Bank Loke and Vicarage Street Car Parks, the District Council is also discussing whether the Town Council wishes to temporarily relocate the weekly market whilst the gas main works take place through the town centre.
The District Council has taken the decision to provide two hours free parking on the sites at Bank Loke and Vicarage Street, where nearly 150 free two-hour parking bays will be made available in the town for the duration of the gas works in the area, which Cadent expect to have completed by 12 April. These arrangements will be in place from Thursday 30 January and over the coming days NNDC will formalize the arrangements for the issuing of tickets through the parking meters.
Cllr Eric Seward, Deputy Council Leader and a Councillor for North Walsham said:
“It was important for the Council to quickly provide support to shops and businesses in the town centre during this difficult period. The provision of two-hour free parking in the town’s major car parks should encourage people to continue to come to the town centre and use its shops and facilities’.
Long Stay Parking will continue to be available at all the Pay and Display Car Parks across North Walsham. The Mundesley Road and New Road car parks remain unaffected by the provisions at Bank Loke and Vicarage Street.
Due to timescales attached to grant funding which NNDC has accessed for Electric Vehicle Charge points, there will unavoidably be some works at Vicarage Street Car Park carried out by the District Council during March, which are not possible to reschedule.
Discussions with regards to the management of the Town Centre works and wider impacts on businesses and the general public will be monitored by the District Council, with the Town Council and Chamber of Trade.
