More than £26m of Government financial support to businesses in North Norfolk affected by the Coronavirus outbreak has been processed so far by the Council, in the form of various rates reliefs, discounts and exemptions.

As the national response to the spread of the virus has stepped up and strict social distancing measures have been implemented, including the closure of many businesses for an unspecified amount of time, the Government has pledged more than £330bn of aid and support for those companies and small businesses affected.

The Government had already implemented a 50 per cent rates discount for retail businesses prior to the outbreak taking hold in this country – but has now extended that discount to 100% until 2021 in an effort to offset the economic impact of Coronavirus in the UK. In addition, it has expanded the types of businesses benefitting from a break in business rates payments from primarily retailers to include the leisure and hospitality sectors and other organisations like pre-school nurseries, estate/lettings agents and bingo halls.

NNDC Revenues Manager Sean Knight said in total to date nearly 6,000 properties have benefited from some form of rate reduction, with in excess of £26m of reliefs, discounts and exemptions now having been awarded.

He commented: “This has been an exceptionally busy time as our team has worked flat out to deliver this rates holiday to an extra thousand affected businesses across North Norfolk, but then these are of course highly unusual circumstances for everyone. I’m not aware that the Council has ever had to process this amount of money affecting this many businesses and organisations to this level in such a short space of time ever before, but our staff have done a great job and are still working very hard to provide vital assistance to our business community."

Leader of the Council Sarah Bütikofer commented: “I want to thank the team at North Norfolk District Council for working so hard to process these discounts as quickly as possible to support our business community through this unique and incredibly difficult time for them.

“I would like to reassure all our residents that we will be doing everything we can to support them through this crisis, and this is just one example of our team spirit to do just that.”
