Historic Parks and Gardens

Historic Parks and Gardens are as much a part of our cultural heritage as individual buildings and settlements. They range from the formal gardens of the 17th century to the more romantic landscapes of the 18th and 19th centuries. All were constructed with as much care as an architect designing a property and have become an integral part of the British landscape.

English Heritage maintains a register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest. The sites are graded I (Exceptional Interest), II* (Great Interest) and II (Special Interest) in accordance with their level of importance. The grades are independent of any associated listed buildings. Although the register does not bring additional controls in play, Local Planning Authorities must take them into account in preparing development plans and in considering planning applications. The register currently contains nearly 1450 sites nationally.
