Do you need Planning Permission?

If you want to build an extension, erect a conservatory or garage or do other work to your home, or if you want to expand your business or change the use of your premises, you may need to apply for planning permission.

For example, If you wish to install a domestic wind turbine on your property, in most cases, you will require planning permission.  If your property is a listed building, and the generator will be fixed to the building, a separate application for Listed Building consent will also be required.

The Planning Portal have provided guidance on the likely need for planning permission, (see links below), however, there may be local circumstances which also need to be taken into account and you are advised to check with Development Control (details at the right of the screen).

If you would like us to check whether you do or don't need planning permission, please download, print and complete this enquiry form   (pdf 25KB), and post it together with a rough sketch of the proposal, as outlined on the form.

If planning permission is granted, you then have to consider how the building or extension is constructed and whether it complies with Building Regulations.   You may need to submit detailed plans to the Building Control Service for approval.
