case study
Sheringham Little Theatre is a lively arts venue and cafe at the heart of the town on the beautiful North Norfolk coast. It stages live theatre and music and film screenings. This community theatre is a small charity which relies on public support to stage its exciting programmes of arts events.
As part of the commitment to lowering its energy costs and carbon emissions, the theatre has worked with environment charity Groundwork to measure their emissions and put in place a decarbonisation plan.
One of the key measures that was explored by Groundwork was to upgrade the theatre’s lighting to low energy LED equivalents. The cost and carbon savings calculations highlighted significantly reduced running costs and a reduced carbon footprint. The theatre was then able to use Groundwork’s report to support an application for grant funding to purchase LED stage lighting.
The benefits and advantages of upgrading to LED lighting include:
Sheringham Little Theatre received a Decarbonisation Plan from Groundwork’s Sustainable Business Services team which calculated the charity’s carbon footprint and explored several carbon reduction actions which could be introduced to reduce their environmental impact. The theatre was then able to apply for a grant towards upgrading stage lighting to low energy LED equipment.
Groundwork East is delivering the North Norfolk Net Zero Advice service and grant programme on behalf of North Norfolk District Council, accessing UK government funding through the Shared Prosperity Fund.

Groundwork’s support helped us to understand what upgrading the stage lighting to LED would achieve - both in costs and carbon terms. The grant meant that the project became achievable for us, allowing us to reduce our carbon footprint and our future energy costs.Debbie Thompson,
