Ben Huggett demonstrates how determination and real-world experience can shape young people’s futures when they are given the proper opportunities. Just four years earlier, Ben was out of work and uncertain about his direction after leaving university partway through a Human Geography and International Relations course. He felt that the academic route wasn’t right for him—he desired a position that allowed him to learn by doing. The Kickstart programme offered Ben the chance he needed, enabling him to transition from Universal Credit into an apprenticeship at Wildcraft Brewery, despite having no prior brewing background.

What sets Ben apart as a rising star is his dedication to perfecting his craft through relentless hard work and hands-on learning. Starting with no knowledge whatsoever, Ben dedicated himself to understanding every aspect of brewing, from the science of fermentation to the practicalities of managing production schedules. He learned by doing, making mistakes, asking questions, and gradually building his expertise. When Wildcraft moved to larger premises on Worstead Estate, Ben rose to the occasion, taking on greater responsibilities. His progression from apprentice to Assistant Brewer demonstrates the results attainable through diligent effort, comprehensive training, and a positive workplace environment.

Ben’s achievements highlight the advantages of working for a supportive local business. Wildcraft provided him with opportunities to learn, trusted him with greater responsibility as his abilities improved, and now he helps train new apprentices by passing on what he’s learned. Being part of the small team at Worstead Estate gives Ben the opportunitiy to engage in a diverse range of tasks—from brewing and packaging to making deliveries and serving customers in the taproom—allowing him to build a broad set of skills.

He shares Wildcraft’s commitment to sustainability and community, showing that he’s found a company where he can grow his career over time. As the business invests in new equipment and continues to expand, Ben’s dedication is opening up even more paths for professional growth.

The apprenticeship opened up a different option. Without it, I probably couldn't have had the opportunity to work for a brewery. It put me back on the right path.Ben Huggett,
