MAMMOTH MARATHON WILL BE BACK ON TRACK IN 2022
The Council regrets to confirm the rescheduled Mammoth Marathon event due to take place on May 16 has been postponed until a date to be confirmed in May 2022 due to Covid safety concerns.
With around 1,000 runners expected to take part and projected crowds of 2,000-plus spectators at points along the route from Sea Palling to Sheringham, the decision to postpone the event again has been taken due to the current UK lockdown and uncertainty as to what anti-Covid regulations might be in place this May.
Councillor Virginia Gay, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Well-being and Culture, said the difficult decision to postpone the event was taken with the safety of competitors, spectators and local residents in mind.
She commented: “We cancelled the original event during the first lockdown in 2020 which was disappointing, but around 950 of the 1,000 runners who signed up to take part stayed registered for the rescheduled marathon and half-marathon which we hoped to run on May 16 this year.
“But unfortunately as we are in another national lockdown and with no certainty as to when or how the current restrictions might be changed, we have had to once again postpone.
“The event was conceived to celebrate our fabulous Deep History Coast and to really promote North Norfolk as a great tourist destination and that’s why we’ve looked to hold it in May prior to the holiday season.
“But regrettably the longevity and gravity of the Coronavirus pandemic has meant it just isn’t safe for us to hold a big and high-profile event such as this at the current time. We hope the competitors will understand our decision and we really look forward to welcoming them for what promises to be a fantastic event in 2022.”
The team will now work with Active, the event’s bookings partner, to set up the most efficient way to handle the next stages. Participants will have the opportunity to roll over their entry to next year’s event or to request a refund, and full details of how to do this will follow in the coming weeks. Please bear with us whilst we put all of these details together, we will be back in touch as soon as this has been confirmed.
Thanks for your continued support and patience throughout this difficult period.
Very best wishes
The MM Team
