North Norfolk District Council has served notice of confirmation of a Compulsory Purchase Order on Huddies Ltd, in relation to the prominent former Shannocks Hotel site in Sheringham.
The Council is fully committed towards seeing progress made and a positive solution found for the site - and serving this notice is an essential part of that process.
The Council acknowledges that the former hotel was demolished by landowners Huddies in 2021, but they have since failed to deliver the approved new mixed housing and retail development for the site (planning reference PF/17/0192).
As the development has unfortunately failed to materialise, Cabinet agreed last month the Council should take the necessary steps to secure the land, to enable progress to be made on the future of this key site in the town.
Cllr Andrew Brown, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Enforcement, said:
“The District Council shares the community’s long-standing concerns about the appearance of the former Shannocks Hotel site and is committed to seeing its replacement with a positive new development to the wider benefit of Sheringham’s residents and visitors.
“Unfortunately, three years after the derelict hotel was demolished, no progress has been made by Huddies Ltd to take forward a replacement development and so the Council now needs to take the necessary steps towards securing a brighter future for this prominent seafront site.”
