Commercial Food Waste Collection Starts This Week

Date published: 11th August 2025
North Norfolk District Council is pleased to announce that the first round of collections for our new commercial food waste collection service has begun, with the first collections taking place today, Monday 11 August.
This is in addition to our existing package of waste and recycling collections and means we can offer a complete service to our customers.
Once collected, the food waste will be anaerobically digested. This process also creates natural gas which feeds into the grid and a nutrient-rich fertiliser is created as a by-product which is used to grow new food.
Cllr. Callum Ringer, Portfolio holder for IT, Environment and Waste Services, commented:
“I am so pleased we have been able to roll out this service to our customers, and I would encourage those that haven’t signed up already to do so.
This will reduce the amount of general waste that eventually needs to be disposed of (none of the waste collected on our behalf goes to landfill) and is also an important step forward as we prepare to roll out domestic food waste collections in 2026, and when ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation begins to apply to micro-businesses in 2027.”
Businesses with ten or more full-time employees have been expected to ensure that their food waste is collected and disposed of responsibility, in line with the Government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation.
