Council Delivers Sustainable Temporary Accommodation

A refurbishment programme to a four-bed property in the district has meant that a family in housing need can be provided with high-quality temporary accommodation.   
 
The property was acquired as part of the Council’s commitment to support residents facing homelessness.   
  
The Council received grant funding from the Local Authority Housing Fund for the purchase of this property, which will be used to house families that are homeless.  
   
Increasing the temporary accommodation housing-stock avoids reliance on expensive bed & breakfast accommodation when households approach the Council in emergency housing need.   
 
Households may find themselves in emergency housing need for a number of reasons, such as fleeing domestic abuse, relationship breakdown or the end of a private rented tenancy. 
   
The property has been updated to be compliant with current safety standards but also provide a comfortable and welcoming home for families. A series of renewable energy technologies have been installed, removing the reliance on gas, reducing the property’s environmental impact and helping to lower energy costs for residents.    

Cllr. Jill Boyle, portfolio holder for Housing and Peoples Services said:

"This is a very rare property. This is a four bedroom property and they are very difficult to become available. We're very excited that we managed to find this beautiful property - it wasn't quite as beautiful as this when we bought it. I'm delighted that a family that don't have a home will now be provided with a really good quality temporary accommodation. 
   
The improvements include 8.5kW solar PV panels, insulation and low-carbon heating, 18kWh battery storage and a 6kW Air Source Heat Pump, which means the property will stay warm in winter, cool in summer and all the excess energy will be returned to the Grid.    
   
The project has been collaborative, with local contractors and specialist partners delivering the works, and the Council’s Housing, Property and Climate teams.    
   
The Council has a statutory responsibility to support anyone presenting as facing homelessness.
