New supermarket for Holt approved

Today Development Committee approved an application from Lidl GB Ltd. to build a new supermarket in Holt.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of approving the application for a new food store located at Nightjar Way, just off of the A148.

A similar application from Aldi Stores Ltd. for Old Station Way was voted against on grounds of highways infrastructural concerns.

Planning Officers recommended that Development Committee approve plans for only one supermarket, as opposed to approving both.

A representative of Holt Town Council also cited costs of living concerns that would be appeased and personally attested to the accessibility of the location by mobility scooter.

The Council received 228 representations from the public in relation to the planning application, of which 186 were positive.

Matters raised in support included the need for a more affordable food store within Holt, a perceived lack of retail choice and competition, and the potential to reduce the need to travel to surrounding towns for main food shopping.

Also proposed on the site is a car park with 120 spaces, electric vehicle charging points and cycle storage. It is expected that the new store will generate up around 40 jobs, adding to Holt and the surrounding area’s local economy.

A representative of Lidl GB Ltd. said they expect to begin development in the coming weeks, with completion in ‘several months’.
