Zoo inspections can take between 4 to 6 months to organise with the appropriate agencies. Please factor this into your plans to apply and renew licences.
Zoo licence
Apply or renew a zoo licence
A licence is required under the Zoo Licensing Act 1981. A zoo is classed as any establishment, other than a circus or pet shop, where animals are kept for public exhibition. Initially, licences are granted for 4 years, and then are renewable every 6 years. The Act also requires, that, at least twice during the term of the licence, an inspection must be carried out by an Inspector appointed for that purpose by the Secretary of State.
We aim to determine applications within 6 months from receipt of a valid application.
Renewal letters are sent approximately 9 months before the licence expires.
