At the Development Committee meeting on Thursday, October 12, Members discussed and unanimously approved North Norfolk District Council's planning applications for works on the Cromer Coastal Management Scheme Phase 2 and the Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme.
The Council will be delivering both schemes, with approximately £25m of funding coming from the Environment Agency, North Norfolk District Council, Anglian Water and Mundesley Parish Council. Balfour Beatty will undertake the construction works.
Phase 2 of the Cromer Coastal Management Scheme will include approximately 300m of rock revetment west of the pier and repair works to groynes, navigation aids and additional sea wall protection.
The Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme will seek to reduce the rate of erosion and it's impacts along almost 2km of vulnerable cliff area.
The works at Mundesley will involve repairs to groynes and navigation beacons, in addition to re-levelling and re-surfacing areas of the east promenade, access improvement works, creation of a temporary rock stockpile to support these projects and future works (subject to consent) and rock protection.
It is estimated work on the two schemes will take approximately 12-18 months to complete, with a start date to be confirmed but hoped to be later this year or early in 2024, subject to confirmation of consents and funding. Extensive consultation with the local communities about the projects has been carried out and will continue once work gets underway.
Cllr. Harry Blathwayt, Portfolio Holder for Coast, commented:
“These works are vital to protect our residents, homes and businesses in Mundesley and Cromer. Considering rising sea levels with an eroding coast, this project is urgently required.
“This is vital civil engineering work and both schemes are scheduled to work in tandem to deliver cost, engineering and logistical efficiencies and also so that disturbance to the local communities can be kept to a minimum.
“The officer team and the contractors are working together to ensure local communities will be involved and informed as the scheme develops.”
