The Council is pleased to announce that work on the Cromer and Mundesley Coastal Management Schemes will start on February 5, 2024.

Works will start on the Mundesley site first with Cromer following 12 weeks later, this is a significant step in protecting residents, homes and businesses in the two towns.

We have created interactive maps with our Coastal Engineers and Balfour Beatty, which include videos explaining the works across both Cromer and Mundesley.

The two schemes have received approximately £25m of funding from the Environment Agency with North Norfolk District Council, Anglian Water and Mundesley Parish Council also contributing towards the Mundesley Scheme.

Phase 2 of the Cromer Coastal Management Scheme will include approximately 300 metres of rock revetment west of the pier and repair works to groynes, navigation aids and additional sea wall protection.

The Mundesley Coastal Management Scheme will seek to reduce the rate of erosion. The scheme will cover 2km in total, with approximately 900 metres of rock to the west and repair works to groynes, navigation aids and additional sea wall protection

The two schemes will take approximately 12-18 months to complete, with contractors Balfour Beatty delivering the construction works on behalf of Coastal Partnership East and North Norfolk District Council.

Extensive consultation has been carried out with the local communities and will continue once work begins.

Cllr Harry Blathwayt, portfolio holder for Coast said:

“These projects going ahead in these challenging times are evidence that North Norfolk District Council, along with our partner agencies, the Environment Agency, Defra, Coastal Partnership East and Coastwise, will continue to protect homes and businesses whenever possible. NNDC will continue to manage the complexities of coastal erosion, transition and adaptation along our beautiful seashore. I would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly to make this happen”.
